Lion in Maasai Mara during Kenya safari

Tour Overview

This four-day route pairs two of Kenya's most reliable wildlife destinations: the Maasai Mara National Reserve, home to the Big Five and — depending on season — the Great Migration, and Lake Nakuru National Park, renowned for its flamingo flocks and rhino sanctuary. It's a well-balanced short safari for travelers who want strong wildlife viewing without a longer time commitment.

Detailed Description

Two full days in the Maasai Mara give real depth to the safari experience — enough time for both a first game drive on arrival and a complete day dedicated to tracking lion, elephant, giraffe, and zebra across the reserve's open plains, with an included Maasai village visit for cultural context. From there, the route continues to Lake Nakuru, whose alkaline waters and surrounding woodland support one of Kenya's most important rhino sanctuaries alongside striking flamingo populations, before returning to Nairobi.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival – Nairobi to Maasai Mara

Airport pick-up and drive to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, arriving in time for lunch and check-in. In the afternoon, visit a Maasai village for traditional dance and cultural insight, followed by your first game drive — with a chance of witnessing the wildebeest migration, season permitting. Overnight in the Maasai Mara.

Day 2: Full Day in Maasai Mara

A full day of game drives across the reserve, home to lion, elephant, giraffe, zebra, and abundant other wildlife, with a packed lunch enjoyed in the bush. Overnight in the Maasai Mara.

Day 3: Maasai Mara to Lake Nakuru

After breakfast and check-out, drive to Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for its flamingo flocks and rhino sanctuary, arriving in time for an afternoon game drive. Overnight near Lake Nakuru.

Day 4: Departure

After breakfast, drive back to Nairobi, with drop-off at the airport timed to your departure flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

The safari package typically includes private safari transportation, an experienced English-speaking safari guide, accommodation, meals as specified in the itinerary, park entry fees, and scheduled game drives in Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru National Parks. Pickup and drop-off in Nairobi can also be arranged. Afric Mzizi Safaris carefully combines these two destinations to provide excellent Kenya wildlife viewing, from the Big Five of the Maasai Mara to the rhinos and birdlife of Lake Nakuru.

Exclusions generally include international flights, Kenya entry requirements, travel insurance, personal expenses, alcoholic and premium drinks, laundry, souvenirs, tips, and optional activities not specifically included in your itinerary. Experiences such as a Maasai cultural visit, hot air balloon safari, private activities, or accommodation upgrades can be added at an additional cost. Afric Mzizi Safaris provides a transparent quotation detailing all inclusions and exclusions before confirmation.

Yes. This is an excellent family safari in Kenya, combining two destinations with diverse wildlife and scenery. Children can enjoy game drives and look for lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, rhinos, and other animals. A private safari vehicle gives families flexibility with game-drive times and rest stops. Afric Mzizi Safaris can recommend family-friendly camps and lodges and adjust the itinerary according to your children's ages and interests.

Both destinations can be visited throughout the year, although June to October is generally popular for wildlife viewing because of drier conditions. July to October is also an excellent period for travelers interested in the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Maasai Mara, although migration timing varies each year. Lake Nakuru can provide excellent rhino and birdwatching opportunities throughout the year. Afric Mzizi Safaris can advise on the best dates based on your wildlife interests, budget, and travel schedule.

Absolutely. Our Kenya safari packages are fully customizable. You can choose your preferred accommodation level, private or other safari arrangements, and additional activities such as a Maasai cultural village visit, hot air balloon safari, photography-focused game drives, or Lake Naivasha boat excursion. If you have additional time, we can also extend the trip to include Amboseli, Samburu, Tsavo, or the Kenyan Coast.

The Maasai Mara offers some of Kenya's best opportunities to see lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, hippos, and many other species. Lake Nakuru National Park is particularly known for its rhinos, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, waterbirds, and other wildlife. Depending on the season, you may also see large concentrations of flamingos and other bird species. Afric Mzizi Safaris' experienced guides use their knowledge of both parks to maximize your wildlife viewing opportunities and create an unforgettable 4-day Kenya safari experience.
