How Cross-Border Safari Travel Works
Moving between Kenya and Tanzania requires more planning than a single-country safari. We coordinate the details as part of your itinerary.
Kenya–Tanzania Border Crossings
Common overland options include the Isebania–Sirari and Namanga border crossings. The most suitable route depends on the safari circuit, accommodation, timing and onward destination. The East African Community lists both Isebania/Sirari and Namanga among its Kenya–Tanzania One Stop Border Posts.
Flights & Bush Connections
Selected itineraries can use bush flights or regional air connections where practical. For example, travelers may fly between safari areas rather than spending an entire day on the road. Flight routing depends on schedules, available airstrips and the final itinerary.
Vehicle Arrangements
Cross-border vehicle arrangements need to be planned in advance because vehicle permissions and operating arrangements can differ between Kenya and Tanzania. We organize the appropriate vehicle and driver-guide arrangements for each country.
Kenya Entry Requirements
Kenya currently requires most foreign visitors to obtain an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation before travel, subject to nationality-based exemptions. The official Kenya eTA guidance also lists a passport validity requirement and supporting travel information.
Tanzania Visa Requirements
Tanzania has its own immigration and eVisa process. Visa requirements depend on nationality; for example, Tanzania's official guidance states that U.S. passport holders travelling for tourism use a multiple-entry visa.
What About the East African Tourist Visa?
The East African Tourist Visa is a joint tourist visa covering Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. It does not cover Tanzania, so travelers combining Kenya and Tanzania need to check Tanzania's separate entry requirements as well.
Best Time to Combine Kenya & Tanzania
The Great Wildebeest Migration is a year-round ecological cycle rather than a single short event. Herd movements take place between the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara ecosystem in Kenya.
The right travel period therefore depends on what you want to experience. Some travelers focus on the Mara during the northern phase, while others prefer to spend more time in Tanzania during other stages of the annual cycle.
Outside migration-focused travel, Kenya and Tanzania can also be combined throughout much of the year for wildlife, scenery and cultural experiences. Your final route should be built around the parks, season and experiences that matter most to you.
