Northern Kenya is the safari most seasoned travelers don't know to ask for: Samburu National Reserve and the private conservancies of the Laikipia Plateau, home to wildlife found almost nowhere else in the country, with a fraction of the vehicle traffic of the southern circuit. This five-to-seven day itinerary is built for travelers who've done a classic Big Five safari before, or simply want something quieter and more exclusive from the start.

Detailed Description

Samburu's semi-arid landscape supports what's often called the "Samburu Special Five" — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich — species rarely seen in Kenya's southern parks. From there, the itinerary moves into Laikipia's private conservancies, where rhino, elephant, and predator conservation work sits alongside genuine cultural encounters with Samburu communities. Optional walking safaris and night game drives add a level of access most conventional safari circuits don't offer, and the whole trip pairs naturally with a Maasai Mara extension or a Diani Beach add-on for travelers who want to build it into a longer Kenya itinerary.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu

Depart Nairobi for Samburu National Reserve, arriving in time for an afternoon game drive and first sightings of the region's distinctive wildlife. Overnight in Samburu.

Day 2–3: Samburu National Reserve

Two full days of game drives tracking the Samburu Special Five, along with elephant, lion, leopard, and the Ewaso Ng'iro River's resident wildlife. Overnight in Samburu each night.

Day 4–5: Transfer to Laikipia Conservancies

Travel to the private conservancies of the Laikipia Plateau, with game drives focused on rhino conservation areas, predator tracking, and expansive open landscapes. Overnight in Laikipia.

Day 6: Walking Safari & Cultural Experience

A guided walking safari with an armed ranger, followed by a cultural visit with a local Samburu community to learn about traditional life in the region. Overnight in Laikipia.

Day 7: Return to Nairobi

Drive or fly back to Nairobi, with connections available for onward international travel or an extension to the Maasai Mara or Diani Beach.
